Welcome to our Sidecar Homepage!

(Below you can see Molly at work during the 2005 Rally)

.

Molly and I attended the 34th Griffith Park Sidecar Rally fall 2005 and had a great time. Molly shot about 3 hours of tape and I took about 200 stills. It was a great rally with rigs from AJS through to Zundapp! Almost every make seemed to be there including BSA, BMW, Ducati, Harley, Honda, Kawaski, Suzuki, Yamaha, Ural, Royal Enfield and a lot more. Molly a 9th grader in High School at the time took advantage of her computer application class and put together her first film. She was able to edit it down to about 60 minutes. This is her first attempt at film making and a few of her action scenes may make you dizzy as she is still learning to pan the camera! If you buy her DVD and start to feel sea sick go to the menu and click on the "Slide Show" it has about 120 stills of most of the rigs that attended plus background music from Molly's Jazz Band. Here is some of our family sidecar history:

Molly Reeves age 7 as "monkey" and Wynn Reeves age 5 as "pilot"

When Molly was born in 1991 I used the proceeds from selling my Montesa trials bike to cover the deductible in our health insurance. In 1993 when Wynn was born I used the proceeds from selling my Ninja to cover the cost of the Epidurial not covered by health insurance. The girls have been a real joy and I could not bring myself to leaving them behind - so I did not replace my motorcycles and after 24 years of riding I put my helmet away (but kept the Cycle World subscription).

Well 1997 the girls and I decided on spending some time together on the road. With the help of Doug Bingham (Mr. Sidecar) I picked up a used NightHawk with only 400 miles on it. Doug got a new Jawa and built a sub frame to mount it correctly to the bike. I chose a lightweight bike because I did not want to risk my girls in right hand turns. It worked - the bike was very stable! It stops great! Top speed with a tail wind is 65mph. In a strong headwind it drops to 45mph. If a tractor trailer is nearby it shoots right back up to 65! We average about 50 miles per gallon. We have put another 3000 miles on the bike. Our favorite ride being to Mariposa for the sidecar rally where Molly won a ribbon in the sidecar games and Wynn won the award for youngest passenger.

January 1999 the girls & I picked up a new rig. It is a Sportster with a Watsonian GP-700. It keeps up with traffic a lot better and is about 7" wider than the Jawa. The girls love the extra space. Gary Bang Harley in Atascadero sold us the bike with Doug Bingham @ Sidestrider once again selling us the rig. This is my first street legal Harley since my Harley Baja 100 that I sold in 1976.

It is now March 2000. Molly and I have put 5000 miles on the Sportster/Watsonian (Wynn likes the tandem bicycle more). I have cut the windshield down which gave me better gas mileage - about 42 mpg & put in a tape deck so Molly can play her "Poke'mon" tapes when we travel. Most of our trips are short ones to places like "Subway". We have done 2 camping trips, both to sidecar rallies. Molly was interviewed by Motorworld and when asked why she liked the sidecar she cracked up the reporter by replying: "Because I don't puke in it like I do the car." Molly does get car sick but for some reason (maybe the breeze?) she doesn't get sidecar sick. I'm very happy with this rig and plan on keeping it. For this year the changes I'd like to make are a softer shock for the sidecar and stiffer rear shocks for the bike.

Update March 2001. Well we are up to 8000 miles on our Sportster/Watsonian Rig. I have installed a set of Works shocks on the Sportster and replaced the rear tire with an auto style tire I picked up from Croker Tire. Still need to find a softer spring for the sidecar. Bike runs fine and is dry - no leaks of any kind. Still happy with this set up. It is tiring on your arms @ 65mph after a couple hours but we rarely go more than 100 miles @ a time so it is not a issue. Wonderful short hop set up. If I was into long distance touring I would probably want a sidecar with electric tilt and a better fairing. But the girls are still young so I bet I get 10 more years out of this set up!

Our Harley - Watsonian Rig

Spring 2004 Wynn lost interest in sidecars but Molly's interest is still strong so we sold the Harley rig and picked up another Honda - Jawa combo so that Molly could work the clutch when she uses it off road. She is using her math class to figure out how many DVD's she needs to sell to buy her own rig when she turns 16!
